Fred Von Gunten’s book, “Power of Positivity:  For Bipolar & Anyone Else”, goes into great detail about the author’s 40 years with Bipolar Disorder 1 and how a continual positive approach changed his life.
At the age of 70, Fred Von Gunten has had five episodes and his last 28 years has been symptom free from being on a low dose of Lithium and his Power of Positivity approach.  He considers himself “functionally cured”.
This book goes into considerable length of the most used and successful psychotherapy treatments that are available, such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Interpersonal Social Rhythm Therapy (IPSRT), and, Family-Focused Therapy (FFT), in conjunction with pharmacotherapy.
The author’s most strong theory in this book is how the “Power of Positivity” can set one self free from both mental and physical illness symptoms just by having a positive outlook.  Throughout the book, Fred Von Gunten, has included many quotes, from others, that have inspired him to maintain his positivity.
I am very pleased this approach has worked out so well for the author, and possibly others, but from my lived experience, or others not yet in the maintenance phase, it is my opinion that Fred Von Gunten’s theory, positivity cures, may not always be the case for long-term freedom of symptoms.  Nevertheless, this is a solid book on a different approach to mental wellness.

This looks interesting but I agree with Laura - the basics of the illness (when talking about Manic Depression or severe Major Depressive Disorder) are physical in nature and need to be addressed.

Psych meds do not address underlying root causes - and are toxic, long term use very harmful. Why so many get put on multiple meds, have to change meds with years of treatment, etc.

I love the positive approach and that he found ways to heal. Yoga is similar in helpfullness for some, vitamins and diet crucial to healting for others, etc.

The basic fact is that they do not know what causes BP. And that psych meds are not treating any identifiable chemical imbalance. They are short-term crisis solutions.

We are all different, but the underlying biological causes need more investigation and support by practitioners.

Some things that have been studied and found helpful are: salmon oil, probiotics, diet (no sugar), and especially for women - identification of and treatment for thyroid imbalance.

I write a ton about these topics on my blog, in hopes of helping others, hope any reader would check it out.

Hi Molly :

Thanks for your response: You surely have worked and researched plenty of other alternatives in controlling all the negative symptoms with Bipolar Disorder Mood Swings. Truly, BP is a chemical - genetic imbalance in the brain's synapses (I address this in the last 2 chapters of my Book : Chapter 18 : The Present Positive Management for Bipolar & Chapter 19 : The Positive Future for Bipolar Disorder.). In the last 5 years since I wrote my book, there has been an abundance of continued Genetic/Brain Chemical research. And surely in the positive area of every thing you mentioned in your blog.

Your blog and your research truly supports many environmental related  causes of BP which you support as excellent controls to suppress negative symptoms of BP. Also we know that Professional Therapy may enhance the need to overcome negative emotional/behavioral overtones so often found with BP.

The point of my Book is emphasizing the Power of Positivity in understanding of how 1) Genetics & Brain Chemistry. 2) Proper Mood Stabilizer Medication. 3) Natural, Diet, vitamin, environmental controls. 4) Psychotherapeutic (CBT) ; can All fit together in untimely achieving episode free stability with BP. With perseverance at 75, I have maintained Stability for over 33 years by constantly utilizing these 4) modalities.

Regards,

Fred L. Von Gunten, O. D.
